- Wave Park Hazy IPA from GoodLife Brewing is the newest in the lineup from GoodLife, named for the wave channel of the nearby Bend Whitewater Park at the Colorado Avenue bridge.
The advent of spring brings forth a shower of new beers, and this year in particular a number of new India pale ales have helped to herald the arrival of warmer days. While there’s no particular springtime IPA style to highlight, the recent releases offer a nice range of variation within the category to fit the season. Here are five newer ones I have enjoyed so far.
Wave Park Hazy IPA, GoodLife Brewing Co. (6.7% ABV, 65 IBUs)
Wave Park is the newest beer in the year-round lineup from GoodLife, named for the wave channel of the nearby Bend Whitewater Park at the Colorado Avenue bridge. It’s the first hazy IPA to join the company’s flagship offerings, and GoodLife highlights its fruity characteristics and resinous hops.

Expect stone fruit and herbaceous floral notes with a touch of dank and jasmine blossoms on the nose. There’s a hoppy spiciness in the taste, with yellow fruits, citrus peel, and pineapple rind complementing the piney hops. An herbal bitterness supports it at the end, without overwhelming.
InspirationALE Kveik IPA, Bevel Craft Brewing (6.5% ABV)
Bevel collaborated with the local chapter of the Pink Boots Society (PBS) on this specialty IPA. The PBS is a non-profit organization whose goal is to support women and non-binary individuals in the fermented beverage industry to advance their careers through education. $1 from every beer sold is donated to the organization.
Available exclusively on draft at Bevel’s brewery taproom, InspirationALE is a golden orange, opaquely hazy IPA that looks a bit like pulpy juice. It has a floral, fruity aroma with a bit of dank character, and the flavor pops — bright and expressive with herbal and tropical fruit notes and an element of spice reminiscent of peppery greens, citrus oil, and tobacco.
Kiefer Magic IPA, Wild Ride Brewing Co. (6.7% ABV, 50 IBUs)
Kiefer Leutschaft was an employee of Wild Ride who lost his battle with mental illness in 2021, and each year since, the company has released Kiefer Magic IPA to raise money for the Rimrock Trails (www.rimrocktrails.org/) Support Fund and Kiefer Leutschaft Memorial Scholarship. The recent Kiefer’s Magical Birthday Bash release parties at both Wild Ride’s Redmond and Prineville locations raised over $47,000.
Kiefer Magic IPA is part of Wild Ride’s Hop Heads Delight hoppy beer series, and is fragrant with dank cannabis character, green fruit and bright citrus notes. It offers up an earthy, lingering bitterness on the palate, with herbal notes of wild greens, black tea, and grapefruit pith, crisp and drinkable overall. $1 from every pint and four-pack sold are donated to the organizations above.
Juicy Drama Imperial IPA, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. (9.6% ABV, 30 IBUs)
10 Barrel’s latest addition joins its revamped HopBurst family of IPAs, which the brewery rolled out last fall. Its three year-round beers in the series, Apocalypse, Cloud Mentality and All Ways Down, are joined by Juicy Drama, an imperial IPA brewed with yuzu, a citrus fruit of Asian origin.
It’s a honey-golden color with a slight haze, and it’s pungently fragrant as soon as you pour it into a glass. The aromatics present a medley of fruits, starting with floral citrus, and remind me of Hawaiian punch and Juicy Fruit chewing gum. Some of that fruity character rolls into the flavor, along with lemony hops and a florid alcohol note, yet it’s easy drinking for its strength.
Benefaction Belgian-style Imperial IPA, Monkless Belgian Ales (9.6% ABV, 50 IBUs)
Monkless does not often brew IPAs, but Benefaction is an exception. This annual limited release is dedicated to battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, in conjunction with the Ales for ALS fundraising program. Each year Ales for ALS develops a special hop blend for breweries to use, and Benefaction is dry hopped with the blend after fermenting with a Belgian Abbey yeast. $2 from every four-pack sold benefits ALS research.
The hops impart fruit in the aroma along with spicy Belgian yeast characteristics, with pear and apple peel playing off of peppercorn and piney notes. It has a big presence on the tongue with a minty-peppery bitterness and an herbal spiciness reminiscent of pepper, coriander, and clove, followed by subtle fruit flavors including melon rind, citrus peel, and green berries.
With the exception of Bevel, all of these are available in cans as well as on draft. And these only scratch the surface — keep an eye out for more fresh, springtime IPA releases from your favorite breweries.
