The leader of a local nonprofit was arrested August 15 after police say they found commercial quantities of meth in his southwest Redmond home.

Gary Lee Hewitt, 58, was charged with possession and unlawful delivery of methamphetamine near a school. Hewitt has been the executive director of St. Vincent de Paul in Bend since 2021.

According to police, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office street crimes unit had been investigating Hewitt and determined he was selling methamphetamine out of his southwest Redmond home that is located near two schools. Warrant in hand, police searched Hewitt’s property.

While in the home, police say they found a “commercial quantity of methamphetamine” as well as scales, packaging material and money. Hewitt was arrested and jailed.

According to court documents, Hewitt was on a conditional release related to a citation in March for failing to report as a sex offender. A prosecutor Aug. 16 filed a motion to revoke that conditional release due to the new drug charges.
