From the editor’s desk: Ranching and rodeoing at 89 years old

Take a ride with Gerald “Pinky” Christopher this week. The Redmond rancher is preparing for his 90th birthday, yet he’s still riding horses, drinking beer and cutting hay. He hasn’t fallen behind on his ranch chores.
“Been here as long as the dirt,” he said in this week’s centerpiece story.
Christopher moved Oregon with his family when he was just a year old. Eventually, the family relocated to Redmond when Pinky was in high school and he’s been here ever since. Christopher had a long and distinguished career as a rodeo clown and has been a longtime community staple. He even ran for mayor once.

Wildfires have been really hammering central and eastern Oregon this year. Gov. Tina Kotek told EO Media Group editors and reporters that work has already begun on getting those fires out, getting those landscapes secured and starting economic and environment recovery efforts.
