April 26, 1917 — In five days last week the French recovered seventy square miles of territory in their irresistible smash, in which German troops made every effort to stem. Great masses of troops were rushed in to reinforce the lines and in one counter attack two divisions — 40,000 men — were literally wiped out by the French machine guns alone. Not only the troops, but German officers, appear thoroughly demoralized. Miles of trenches and bomb proofs which the Germans had spent two years in building were taken in a few minutes and since April 9 when the offensive began, 36,000 prisoners and 500 guns have been captured.

April 16, 1942 — The second meeting of the series of classes in fire defense for Redmond’s Civilian Defense Organization will be held on Friday evening, April 17, in the auditorium at the high school, Fire Chief John Berning said this week. Sixty-four members of defense organization attended the first session held last Thursday night, at which Chief Berning gave a short lecture on fire prevention, pointing out that everyone should think in terms of preventing fires by eliminating hazards and taking precautionary steps. In time of emergency, he pointed out, each householder will be on his own and should know how to protect his property. Two short pictures, donated by the Redmond Motor Company and by James Conley were shown to the group. A five minute short on taking care of incendiary bombs has been issued by the government, Berning said and will be shown at the Mayfair theatre next Saturday night and at the Odem Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

April 15, 1992 — It’s back to the negotiation table for the disputed contract between the Redmond School District and the district’s teachers. Late Friday afternoon the Redmond Education Association representative council voted to reject the fact-finding report of Carlton Snow. Earlier the school board voted unanimous to accept the report. The REA rejects the report on two reason: salary increase and personnel. “We felt the 3 percent salary increase Snow recommended was inadequate,” said Barbara Barber, chair of the REA negotiating team. “The school board has already offered and agreed to a 4.25 percent increase and we felt we were not being responsible by agreeing to a later increase.” The REA also rejected the report because probationary teachers were not included in the just cause stipulation Snow recommended for tenured teachers.
