Joann fabrics, long a destination for sewing and crafts enthusiasts, is closing.

The Bend and Redmond Joann fabric and craft stores will be liquidating their inventory in preparation for closing the stores permanently as the company goes through the sale process in bankruptcy court, according to a company statement.

In Central Oregon two stores, in Redmond on SW Sixth Street and in Bend at 61284 S. U.S. Highway 97, are affected by the sale. The chain has 800 stores in 49 states that all will close. The company filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 on Jan. 15 and initially planned to close 500 of its 800 stores, according to company statements.

No date for closure has been given, but some reports say the stores will remain open through May.

On Sunday, the company announced that the GA Group and Prepetition Term Loan Agent had been selected as winning bidders to purchase most of the chain’s assets, subject to bankruptcy court approval.
