Jan. 17, 1918 — The murder of four men and the badly wounding of a fifth is laid at the door of Capt. L. R. Whistler, of the 354th infantry stationed at Camp Funston, Kansas.
It was late Friday evening when a cold storm was raging that men in the army bank responded to a knock at the door and finally admitted a man wearing the uniform of a captain, who promptly lined them up against the wall and took the money in sight. Just as he was leaving the cashier admitted that he recognized him, when he promptly proceeded to kill them with a hatchet. The cashier later recovered sufficiently to tell his story and may live.
Finger prints were found and an order issued for all captains to report for examination, and when knowledge of the order reached him, Captain Whistler shot himself at once through the head.

Subject of the conference was official relations between the two bases. Comment was made that since the fields are situated so close together, there would be a considerable amount of communication.
