In Brief: Library to expand hours starting Thursday

New library hours: The Redmond Library will have expanded hours starting Aug. 1. New hours will be from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and it will remain closed Sundays. The current hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, except for Tuesdays, when the library is open until 8 p.m., and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays. According to a news release, the expanded hours across the Deschutes Public Library system come after engaging 1,500 community members, who overwhelmingly wanted expanded hours. Red Cross Blood Drives: The Red Cross has announced an emergency blood shortage and is asking anyone eligible to give blood. According to a press release, donors who give blood from now until Aug. 29 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card. Red Cross blood drives will take place from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. today at Eagle Crest Resort, River Run Events Center, 1730 Blue Heron Drive; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday at St Charles Medical Center Redmond, 1253 N. Canal Blvd.; and 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, 450 SW Rimrock Way. Habitat golf tournament planned: Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity has scheduled its annual golf tournament for Aug. 17 at Eagle Crest Resort. Registration and a continental breakfast is scheduled for 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. It will feature a four-person team scramble and long drive competitions and a silent auction. According to a news release, 100 percent of money raised will go toward building homes and helping clients. COCC to host health degrees meeting: Central Oregon Community College Redmond Campus will play host to an informational session on its allied health programs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday in room 306 in Building 3. According to a news release, health programs covered will include dental assistant, massage therapy, medical assistant, pharmacy technician and veterinary technician. Each occupation will be described, including clinical or administrative duties and the certification or licensing required. You do not need to be enrolled at COCC to attend and reservations aren’t required. Call 541-383-7420 for more information.
Local student graduates at Gonzaga: Alyssa Heyer of Redmond graduated May 12 at Gonzaga University’s commencement at the Spokane Veterans’ Memorial Arena. She earned her bachelor’s of arts in psychology from the private Jesuit school of 7,800 students.
