Redmond Fire & Rescue joins red cross to assist with fire: Local American Red Cross assisted Redmond Fire & Rescue responders during a fire at 9:35 a.m. March 24 in the 700 block of NW 28th Loop. Responders were called to a fire located in the attached garage of a two-story home. The family was home at the time and escaped without injury. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire; however, the living area was damaged by smoke. The Red Cross provided resources to help address the immediate basic needs of those affected, such as temporary housing, food, clothing, comfort kits with toiletry items, information about recovery services, and health and mental health services. The damage to the home was estimated at approximately $50,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Oregon State Police Troopers arrest Terrebonne man at capitol: Oregon state troopers were called to the Capitol building in Salem, where 200 to 300 people of two opposing groups were involved in a disturbance, at 11 a.m. March 25. Matthew Curtis Heagy, 31, of Terrebonne, was detained, accused of using pepper spray and spraying a trooper. It was determined that Heagy is a convicted felon and is under suspicion of being in possession of a firearm, though the alleged firearm was never displayed during the event. This is an active investigation and no further information is available.

KNOPP AND WHISNANT HOST LOCAL TOWN HALLS: State Sen. Tim Knopp and state Rep. Gene Whisnant will hold three town halls to discuss the first 60 days of the 2017 legislative session. The meetings will be at 10 a.m. March 31 at Sunriver Library before continuing at 1 p.m. at Christian Living Center Church in Bend and finishing at 3:30 p.m. in Redmond City Hall’s new location at 411 SW Ninth St. The legislators will hear from citizens about their concerns with the Oregon budget, revenue proposals and policy bills. The Central Oregon Postal Collective to meet: The group will meet at 10 a.m. April 1 at the Redmond Karate building at 515 SW Cascade St. This club — affiliated with the American Philatelic Society — will focus on mourning covers and mail from funeral homes in this month’s program. Deschutes County offering classes for mentors: On April 8, Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth — a program of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office — will offer an orientation/training class that covers program policies, how to establish a mentor relationship, the impact incarceration has on families and communication skills. Redmond Oregon Indivisible to meet: A strategy group affiliated with the national organization, Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda, will hold its next meeting at 3:30 p.m. April 20. The location has yet to be determined. The group’s actions involve contacting members of Congress and other officials about local and national issues. Redmond JROTC Academic Team Advances to National Championship: Redmond High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Academic Team has advanced to compete in person at the Marine Corps JROTC Academic Championship in Washington, D.C., this summer. Redmond High’s JROTC Academic Team includes team captain junior Kason Rondo, junior Alex Cozine, junior Randy Garcia and sophomore Megan Kolkman. The team is led by retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Doug Seal and retired Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Mike Trammel. The team is one of only eight Marine Corps JROTC Academic Bowl teams in the nation to advance to the finals. The winner of the Marine Corps JROTC Academic Championship will compete against the winners of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force JROTC Academic Bowls in the JROTC Joint Service Academic Bowl Championship.
