Correctional Institution Recruiting Event: Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras will play host to a recruiting event for potential correctional officers from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday. Interested applicants will learn more about working in Oregon’s criminal justice system. During the event, attendees will tour the facility, take the National Testing Network React Test and be interviewed. Attendees must bring a valid form of photo identification and may not wear any blue clothing or anything suggestive. The Correctional Institution is located at 3920 E. Ashwood Road, Madras.

High Desert Garden Tour: The Oregon State University Extension Service and Central Oregon Chapter of OSU Master Gardeners are presenting the annual High Desert Garden Tour. The tour is self-guided and will feature seven gardens where OSU Master Gardeners will answer gardening questions. This year’s tour will take place on July 16 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Redmond.

Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration: Redmond Parks and Recreation District is playing host to this year’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration at Deschutes County Fair and Expo 11 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4. The family-friendly event is free and open to all ages. The event will feature a petting zoo, craft activities, old-fashioned games, bounce houses and more. Food and beverages will be available to purchase at the venue. After the celebration, the Redmond Chamber of Commerce will put on the Redmond Fireworks show, beginning at dusk.

Redmond Student Awarded at COCC Commencement: Lisa Mathis, of Redmond, was awarded the Avon F. Mayfield Award at the Central Oregon Community College commencement ceremony. The award recognizes her scholarship, leadership and service to the community. She will attend Oregon State University-Cascades in the fall, where she will pursue a degree in human development and family studies.

Redmond Graduate from Boston University: Joshua Schrock, of Redmond, recently graduated from Boston University, where he received a master’s degree in journalism.

Students Named graduates and to Dean’s List at George Fox: Matthew Miller and Jammie Newton, both of Redmond, recently graduated from George Fox University in Newberg. Miller received a bachelor’s degree in allied health, and Newton received a master’s degree in teaching. Additionally, Redmond natives Samantha Biever, Sommer Kirk, Raeann Morelli and Caleb Reynold have been named to the spring 2016 dean’s list at the university. Sarah MacKenzie, of Terrebonne, was also named to the dean’s list and recently graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
