New Redmond donut shop offers boba, Japanese crepes and paninis

Rows of colorful hand-dipped glazed donuts greet customers at Morning Story, a new breakfast shop on Sixth Street in Redmond. The rotating daily donut flavors ($2.50-$3.75) are topped with eye-catching pink and blue icing, caramel corn, bacon, Fruity Pebbles and marshmallows.

Some of the sugar-laden confections are cut with fruit so not all pastries are straight sugar, said co-owner Tanankam Thanitithanand, who goes by Yee. The donuts are just the beginning of the story, as the shop also prepares sweet and savory Japanese crepes and paninis.

The breakfast joint joins Redmond’s burgeoning downtown area in the former space of Halo Donuts & Deli. Yee operates the business with Molly Stephen, and both are the owners of Oishi, the Japanese restaurant across the street. Asian influences are incorporated into the new menu, with options such as its seasonal sticky rice and mango.

Fresh boba

Also on the menu is boba tea, available with alternate toppings such as rainbow jelly, lychee jelly or popping boba. Yee is meticulous about keeping the boba fresh and whips up a fresh batch every three or four hours, she said.

“I don’t like powder,” Yee said, adding that she avoids using it as much as possible.

Thai milk tea ($5 small, $6 large) is made with fresh tea leaves and the Taro milk tea ($6 small, $7 large) is mixed with a taro paste made from the root vegetable rather than powder.

The freshness was evident in the flavor of the tapioca pearls, which had a fresh and gooey consistency. The taro had a pleasantly nutty flavor with a vanilla undertone, but a slightly grainy texture.

Positive changes

Sahalie Brown, who was hired during the transition to the new store, said she has noticed a lot of positive changes as a result, such as more people coming into the store.

Last Tuesday morning, Morning Story was a revolving door of customers popping in to pick up boxes of donuts and Japanese crepes.

Yee said she plans to hang a community board in the shop where customers can share their personal stories or whatever might be happening for them on that day.

The team is still ironing out how many donuts to bake per day. To guarantee the best selection — or any donuts at all — plan to arrive at Morning Story early in the day. Day-old donuts are sometimes sold at a discounted price.
