- The Redmond City Council plans to convert one of the tennis courts at Valleyview in souwest Redmond into new pickleball courts.
The Redmond City Council gave the thumbs up on Tuesday for the rehabilitation of tennis and pickleball courts at Sam Johnson and Valleyview parks, with plans to convert one of the two tennis courts at Valleyview into new pickleball courts.
During the city council’s regular meeting on Oct. 21, the council approved the $161,177 to rehabilitate courts at both Sam Johnson and Valleyview parks and to convert one tennis court at Valleyview into four new pickleball courts.
Maria Ramirez, parks planner and projects manager with the city’s parks division, said it was about time to spruce up the courts, which were beginning to show their age.
“Public courts are typically resurfaced anywhere from seven to 15 years,” Ramirez said. “Our Sam Johnson tennis and pickleball courts were resurfaced a little under 10 years ago and our Valleyview tennis courts were resurfaced 17 years ago. It was due for a resurfacing at both sites.”
The one and only bid on the work was from Pacific Ace, LLC, a tennis court construction company based in Washington State.
Ramirez said the goal of turning one of the tennis courts at Valleyview into four pickleball courts is to lessen the demand on the heavily-trafficked pickleball courts at Sam Johnson Park and to create more recreational opportunities at Valleyview. The goal is to begin the resurfacing and tennis court to pickleball court conversion project by April and finish by June, Ramirez said.
The city council also discussed a list of proposed amendments to sections of the Redmond Development Code on topics including rules on signs and food carts, amendments to the city’s zoning map, and an update on zoning on airport property.
Rules for temporary food carts When putting a food cart on private property a permit from both Redmond Fire & Rescue and a Deschutes County Environmental Health License are required. Food carts are allowed at any event held on private property such as picnics, birthday parties, weddings and family reunions. Food carts are allowed in commercial, industrial, residential and mixed-use areas in the city.
Food carts on public property require a business license, public assembly/special events permit, and a parks reservation. They can be set up at events like farmers markets, car shows and any private events held with a parks reservation.
Permanent food cartsFor food carts intending to set up shop for the long run, a business license and a temporary-use permit is required. The permit must be renewed annually. A food cart can be an addition to an existing business or can stand alone. They are permitted on private property and most areas in the city except residential.
Food truck pods A pod with multiple established food trucks requires a business license, a site and design review. If food trucks are added to an existing pod, minor alterations to the site are required. Food truck pods are allowed on private property and most areas in the city except for residential areas.
