- The children's book "When Dawson Meets Dood," is set in Redmond and features work by Prineville illustrator Mary Buell.
A new children’s book set in Redmond was written by a former resident and illustrated by Prineville-based artist Mary Buell.
The book is titled “When Dawson Meets Dood,” andis the first installment of a series titled the “Tummy Heart Commotion,” designed to help kids understand and manage their feelings.
It was written by Oregon native Christine Durfee, a therapist now residing in Texas who specializes in children, families, and individuals on mental health journeys.
The story follows Dawson, a young Asian-American boy living in Redmond as he navigates the excitement and anxieties of welcoming a new pet into his family.
“Tummy Heart Commotion” addresses the common experience of big feelings manifesting as a “commotion” in the tummy and heart. Durfee, known as “Mema” to her grandchildren, draws on her expertise in autism, family systems, and attachment to create relatable content that encourages empathy and kindness.
The book explores themes of friendship, adventure, and pet care, while subtly promoting the importance of animal adoption. The illustrations are by Prineville-based artist Mary Buell of NW Arts & Recreation. Buell said the works are filled with details, including hidden “Easter eggs” in scenes set in Redmond and Central Oregon, where Dawson has spent his first year.
The inspiration for “Tummy Heart Commotion” stems from Durfee’s YouTube channel, “Stories With Mema,” where she reads books to her grandchildren.
Pre-orders for the book are now available. It will officially be released on April 1.
