Central Oregon runners dominate Bend Marathon races

Central Oregon runners dominated the Bend Marathon’s four races on Sunday, as runners from Bend won both the men’s and women’s divisions of the marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometer and 5K.

Nearly 2,000 runners competed across all four races in the ninth edition of the event. Most participants hailed from Central Oregon and the Northwest, but runners came from across the country to compete.

The half marathon was the most popular of the four races with 751 runners.

Bend’s Mario Mendoza won the half marathon in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 27 seconds, and Bend’s Karyn Woods won the women’s division in 1:29:15.

The marathon included 308 runners. Bend’s Todd Simpson won the marathon in 2:47:07, and Bend’s Hilary Kupish was the top women’s finisher in 3:03:42.

The 10K and 5K courses took runners along the paved paths paralleling the Deschutes River in the Old Mill District. Bend’s John Jessler won the 10K in 37:47, and Bend’s Ann Scott-Plante claimed the women’s division of the 10K in 46:54. Nearly 400 runners competed in the 10K.

Bend’s Aoibhe Richardson topped all runners to win the 5K in 16:33, and Bend’s Dirk Van Der Velde won the men’s division of the 5K in 16:33. The 5K included more than 400 runners.

Peterson Ridge Rumble also held Sunday

The Peterson Ridge Rumble trail-running event was also staged on Sunday in Sisters. The event included a 40-miler, a marathon and a 20-miler on the Peterson Ridge Trail network just south of Sisters.

Evan Moreau, of Sisters, won the 40-mile race in 5:10:21, and Allison Churchill, of Springfield, was the women’s winner in 5:48:58.

Salem’s Adam Schaeffer won the marathon in 3:22:12, and Canby’s Rachel Peters won the women’s division in 3:31:27.

Bend’s Ryan McLaughlin won the 20-mile race in 2:16:16, and West Linn’s Emma McCurry was the women’s winner, finishing in 2:33:29.
