Free COVID-19 testing at fairgrounds today

Deschutes County Health Services is partnering with Oregon Health Authority to offer a free drive-thru COVID-19 testing event from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center.

The testing event is open to anyone and participants will receive a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, with test results available in two to three days. Participants are not required to provide ID or have symptoms, but are asked to wear a mask and register online at doineedacovid19test.com/Redmond_OR_4369.html. Staff will be onsite to register those who are unable to preregister.

“We are grateful to be able to provide an opportunity for our community to easily access free COVID-19 testing,” said Deschutes County Public Health Director Nahad Sadr-Azodi, in a press release. “This event will also allow our teams to prepare for future vaccine clinics at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center.”

Redmond man arrested following weekend pursuit

Glen James Carroll, 47, of Redmond, was arrested on multiple charges following a pursuit by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies Saturday morning, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle, a 2001 Volvo, at about 8:53 a.m. in the area of NW Sixth Street and NW Quince Avenue for violations including speeding, failure to use turn signal and expired registration. The vehicle continued westbound on NW Quince Avenue and made its way back to Highway 97 from NW Pershall Way and started to drive southbound through Redmond on Highway 97. Redmond Police offers deployed spike strips in the area of Highway 97 and SW Evergreen Avenue and the vehicle drove over the spikes with the rear passenger side tire and continued southbound.

After leaving city limits, at a speed of approximately 100 mph, the tire deflated and and came off the car. The driver continued east of Highway 97 on Tomahawk Avenue, taking a BLM road, crossed the railroad tracks and started driving northeast through BLM land. Eventually Carroll exited the vehicle and a deputy was able to take him into custody after a short foot pursuit.

When arrested, Carroll was allegedly in possession of about one ounce of suspected methamphetamine and was charged with felony attempt to elude, misdemeanor attempt to elude, lawful possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving and driving while suspended. Carroll was cited and released at the scene for the above mentioned charges.

Housing Works is accepting applications for HCV waiting list

Housing Works is accepting applications for the Housing Choice Voucher program (formerly known as the Section 8 program) waiting list through 5 p.m. Jan. 15.

The program is open to low-income qualified residents of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook county. Applicants must reapply each year for the waiting list. Applications will be randomized by a computer to give all applicants an equal chance, according to a Housing Works press release. All applications must be submitted online at oregonhousingworks.org.

Redmond Spirit Foundation taking grant applications

Redmond’s Spirit Foundation is accepting applications of donation requests up to $10,000 from 501©3 organizations working with children, handicapped, elderly, or disadvantaged individuals in Redmond. The deadline to apply is Jan. 15. To request an application, email RedmondSpirit@gmail.com.

Dean’s list

Elizabeth McCook, of Redmond, has been named to the fall 2020 dean’s list at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind., an accomplishment that requires a 3.5 gpa or better and at least 12 credit hours. McCook is majoring in literature.
