Column: Keeping recreation accessible and affordable

My name is Katie Jalo. I’m running for Redmond Area Park and Recreation District board position #1. I am a third generation Central Oregonian, raising the fourth generation, my daughter, in Redmond. Growing up, my family spent a lot of time in the desert and in the mountains. My husband and I love to show these places to our toddler, and she is quickly becoming a lover of outdoor recreation.

I believe the district is for everyone, and recreation programs are extremely important for the community. Robust recreation opportunities keep people healthy, generate revenue, and build community.

As a board member I will prioritize maintaining the parks and facilities in the district, as well as expanding recreational opportunities to meet the needs of our growing community. A current effort is underway to create trail systems between existing properties in Redmond, Terrebonne, and Smith Rock areas. This is a fabulous and low-cost effort to expand what we have and I can’t wait to help out with it.

The new rec center building is long overdue and very exciting. Unfortunately, the funding for operational costs was voted against more than once, which is disheartening. However, I want to come up with a plan to make sure hours don’t need to be drastically cut and that everybody who wants to use it has a chance to, without having to spend months on a class waiting list. Building picnic shelters on existing properties to rent out would be an excellent revenue source. Why not merch, like fun stickers and t-shirts? Concession stands sponsorships for district sports leagues?

I will use my experience as a financial administrator for a Pacific Northwest nonprofit to look critically at budgets and financial documents to help make the best decisions possible that benefit us all in the long term. I believe we can expand while also being fiscally responsible. Low cost upgrades to existing RAPRD properties will help us in the long run and it is important to expand useful access for everyone. I will also look for grants and other alternative funding methods.

I am a positive force in our community, no matter what happens in May. I urge all voters to spend some time looking at candidate information whether it is through campaign websites or social media. I believe this is about more than just running and building parks, it is about strengthening our community.

And it is important to be wary of those with alternative agendas or those who use derogatory language when deciding who to vote for as a community leader.

I would be honored to be elected to the RAPRD Board of Directors and to represent all of you. Thank you for your support!
