Two champions at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions not only come from the same school, but the same family.

In a tournament that featured the best high school wrestlers in all of Oregon, Bend High’s Eric and Leif Larwin were the winning wrestlers in their respective weight classes at the TOC at Sherwood High School on Friday and Saturday.

“It is super special to both be in the finals and both come out on top,” said Leif Larwin, a sophomore. “Bend High has never had two Reser’s champs at the same time. Not only that, but being the only guys from Central Oregon. We are not only representing our school but our portion of the state.”

“It felt great,” said Eric Larwin, a senior. “It was great to see my hard work pay off. All the stuff I’ve been doing in the offseason, all the extra training came together to this big cumulative event so that I can go out there and compete my best and find success. It was a blast to go out there. I was really grateful for the opportunity.”

It was the first title at the TOC for Eric Larwin, who was the No. 3 seed in the 150-pound weight class. He picked up two first-round pins in his first two matches, then won by technical fall in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Eric Larwin — last year’s second-place finisher at the state meet in the 138-pound weight class — won 12-5 against Philomath’s Riley Barrett, the No. 2 seed. Then in the finals, he won by major decision over top-seeded Matthew Young of Canby to claim the title.

Thus far this season, Eric Larwin is undefeated in 21 matches.

“When I’m looking at the bracket, seeding doesn’t really matter,” Eric Larwin said. “I’m just going to wrestle who I’m going to wrestle and I’m going to wrestle my best. When I’m wrestling my best, no one can beat me.”

After winning the TOC and a state title as a freshman, Leif Larwin could feel more eyes on him while he was wrestling than in the previous year. But the sophomore handled the pressure of being the top seed in the 175-pound weight class, proving last year’s title was no fluke.

None of Leif Larwin’s four matches went past the second round. His first two matches ended in technical falls. Then he claimed a first-round pin over Sweet Home’s Luke Rosa in the semifinals, before pinning Canby’s James Keinonen in the championship.

“This year was definitely tough. I wrestled some really good opponents and formidable athletes who train all year long,” said Leif Larwin, who has won 35 of 36 matches this season. “I’m grateful to go out and face good competition in the state and see the best guys in the state.”

Four more Central Oregon wrestlers reached the finals, but came up just shy of claiming a title. Crook County’s Tanner Brumble reached the finals of the 106-pound weight class. Mountain View’s Aiden Nelmes, last year’s 106-pound 5A state champion, reached the finals of the 120-pound weight class.

Redmond’s Ryder Lee took second in the 126-pound weight class, as did La Pine’s three-time state champion Devon Kerr in the 138-pound weight class. Kerr was was one of only two 3A wrestlers in the tournament to reach the finals.

Crater finished with the most team points (186.5). Three Central Oregon teams finished in the top eight: Crook County was sixth (125), Redmond took seventh (101) and Bend finished eighth (99.5).
