Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, a child mentorship organization operated by J Bar J Youth Services, has put a call out for male mentors. The Bend-based nonprofit is seeking caring adults to mentor 63 boys aged 6 to 17.

Meet-ups between mentors and boys typically happen twice a month and activities can be anything from hikes to just throwing around a football. Help with homework is also needed, said the organization’s program director Jenn Davis.

Davis says 53% of kids in the program are from single-parent families and all face some kind of adversity. This year, the organization has around 220 kids either with a mentor or seeking one.

Big Brothers Big Sisters operates in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties. There is a need for mentors across the region the need is particularly high in Redmond, said Davis.

To sign up to be a mentor go to the website bbbsco.org to fill out an application. The organization also accepts donations to help pay for the activities that mentors and kids do together.
