Pangaea Guild Hall connects Redmond’s ‘geeky community’

Pangaea Guild Hall is a coffee shop, a cocktail bar and a board game lounge all rolled up into one.

The downtown business opened its doors on April 17. Cafe owner Chris Trulsen said the response has “been going great,” with good crowds and energy around its ideas.

“We noticed that Redmond seemed like they were underserved in the kind of board games, geeky community,” Trulsen said.

He, along with his wife Keri, saw a niche for people who love board games but also want to be social. And he didn’t want to directly compete with neighboring game shops, either.

“We wanted to do something different than everyone else,” Trulsen said.

To stand apart, Trulsen decided to offer coffee, cocktails and food. Instead of just calling Pangaea Guild Hall a cafe or bar, he decided to go with guild hall since “it’s hard to find a term that encapsulates everything that we do.”

The hall is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with the cocktail bar opening at 4 p.m. They’re closed on Mondays.

Pangaea Guild Hall also puts on weekly and monthly events or campaigns, such as a Dungeon and Dragons game night, a “barbecue bash” and a Halloween-themed party, which Trulsen is already planning for October.

The two-story building covered in dragon decor and has a medieval motif, helping bring each D&D game to life.

The guild hall has private gaming rooms to rent at a cost of $15 an hour. There are around 50 games to choose from, according to employee Grace Sorensen. Sorensen said typically gamers stay about four to six hours.

Sorensen has worked for the guild hall since April and appreciates how Tulsen cares about his employees and the passion he has for the business.

“We actually have an all staff campaign when we’re closed, so we all just come in and Chris makes us dinner and we get to pick whatever drinks we want,” Sorensen said. “We just sit and play D&D.”

On Monday the staff played D&D and had the final leg of the game they’d been playing.

“I got the final kill with a shovel whack,” Sorensen said with a grin.

If someone is interested in attending a board game event, they don’t need experience or need to arrive with a designated team, Trulsen said. Additionally, if someone is under the legal drinking age, they can still participate in events, though not in the bar area.

“We’re open and inclusive to all walks of life,” Trulsen said. “Come in, hang out and relax … Some people, especially the older generation say ‘Oh, I thought you guys were just some sort of secret society or with a membership’ or something like that. No, really we’re just a restaurant. We’re open to everyone.”

Sorensen’s mother Celina McKenzie took notice of the inclusivity of Pangaea Guild Hall, noting the women -only D&D nights.

“I’m Gen X and this is kinda our thing for so long so to see it be so open and welcoming is nice because, you know, there’s not a whole lot out here for us to do on that route,” McKenzie said. “But a lot of people my age, we’re still looking for stuff like that.”

McKenzie said works with people seeking sobriety, so she appreciates the options Pangaea Guild Hall offers for those who want to get out and be social, but not necessarily at a bar. She said there’s not many places like that in Redmond.

McKenzie originally from Las Vegas, where there’s more options for fantasy lovers.

“It’s hard to find that in Oregon where every time you turn around there’s a brewery,” she said. “I just really appreciate what they’re doing.”

According to Trulsen, their most popular foods include charcuterie boards and hand pies, which are almost like a calzone but instead of pizza dough, it’s made out of pie crust. The Great Odin’s Raven is their “best selling” cocktail — a bourbon and mead mix. Other menu items include grilled sandwiches, snack trays, pretzels, brownies, a Nutella affogato dessert, cappuccinos, mochas and more.
