On May 13, the table was set for ten Redmond High School athletes from seven different sports, each ready to have their hard work pay off and make their college sports dreams official by signing the dotted line.
Family, friends and supporters filled the Redmond High Schools theater ready to cheer on the athletes on their signing day. Athletes received scholarships in sports spanning from soccer to wrestling, cheerleading to baseball, swimming to track and field and softball.
Seniors Jillian Bremont will attend University of Portland and Aiden Olmos will attend Pacific University. Both Bremont and Olmos both competed in the hurdles for Redmond track and field.
During the final stretch of their last season together, Bremont and Olmos reached the OSAA State Championships. both said they valued the camaraderie and the competition.
“Not only have we been on the same team together for all four years, we also do the same events,” said Bremont. “So to also be able to go to college for track is amazing, we always push each other and support each other and I’m so proud every time one of us gets a (personal record) or something good happens.”
Mackenzi Stecher-Reed and Joseph Olmeda will both attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on a cheerleading scholarship. That made Stecher-Reed and Olmeda the first cheerleaders in RHS history to receive and attend a Division I school on a cheerleading scholarship.
“GCU was definitely my first choice for school, but I wasn’t sure if I was gonna make it onto their team” said Stecher-Reed. “I’m hoping to just be myself and be hardworking because my coach showed me that even on the hardest days we have to show up and show our best.”
Olmeda originally joined the cheerleading team during his junior year of highschool when the cheer team was in need of a stuntman. At the time Olmeda was also a member of the Redmond High basketball team.
“I’ve had this goal for almost a year and it’s finally paying off and seeing it happen,” said Olmeda. “Definitely feels good.”
Joey Downing will attend Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay on a wrestling scholarship. Downing ended his high school wrestling career as state champion.
“It felt great,” said Downing. “It was just so much hard work that I put in, throughout my whole life. I’ve been wrestling since I was five and just finally getting that title .. it was so rewarding.”
Downing has goals off the mat, too, as he plans to use his stop at community college to become a special education teacher.
“I have a strong passion for being an (independence and learning support) teacher, and so just pursuing that is really what I’m excited for the most,” he said.
Downing wasn’t the only Redmond athlete hoping to go into education. Chloe Reams will attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland to play softball and major in education.
“I chose Lewis and Clark because their education program is really good and the team was really nice and the coaches were really nice, too,” said Reams.
Two baseball teammates will have to go their separate ways after concluding this final season together.
Ryker Altizer will attend Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls and Colten Horner will attend Arizona Christian University.
Both were thankful for the coaches that guided them through high school. Altizer said the Redmond High coaches taught him to be hardworking at the plate and in school and life.
After setting the Redmond High School record for saved goals with a total of 237 saves, goalie Brandalynn Sims will attend Southwestern Oregon Community College on a soccer scholarship.
“It felt really nice knowing that not only my hard work paid off but the coaches and their hard work with me paid off and my mom’s hard work of getting me to where I needed to be also paid off, I’m so grateful for that,” said Reams. “I’m looking forward to exploring the Oregon coast a little bit more and finding who I really am.”
Swimmer and water polo player Dylan Hall is heading of to his dream school — George Fox University in Newberg — on a swimming scholarship. Hall was a four year dual sport varsity athlete while at Redmond.
“It felt really fulfilling, to just be able to take the next step in this sport,” he said. “But I’m also excited to just experience college.”
