Letter: Central Oregon Dems should support McLeod-Skinner

Calling Deschutes Dems! Let’s replace Lori Chavez-DeRemer with an actual public servant by sending Jamie McLeod-Skinner to Congress.

Unlike LCD and Primary opponent Janelle Bynum, McLeod-Skinner refuses corporate PAC dollars, staying accountable to us. With Bynum’s corporate PAC and other mostly out-of-state funding, we are deluged with unfair mud-slinging. Yet we hear Bynum ads claiming to restore “decency” in Congress. Please.

Jamie has a background in water, land, wildfire science, policy, and management. As a member of the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, her commitment to solving Oregon’s environmental challenges is stellar. For Bynum, a natural resource stewardship ethic is simply missing.

Jamie would absolutely defend victims of rape and sexual assault. Bynum’s inexplicable refusal to vote to extend protections for survivors of sexual violence from 2 to 7 years would sink her in November.

Bynum’s premise that beating Chavez-DeRemer twice in past state house races is relevant to the CD5 race is incorrect. Any Democrat could beat any Republican in that blue population — a tiny fraction of the entirety of CD5. Unlike Jamie’s widespread grassroots popularity, Bynum has zero base of support outside the Portland metro area.

It is highly unlikely LCD can win a reelection with her “no” votes for veterans and health care, and unwillingness to reauthorize the Farm Bill — all things CD5 citizens want and need. So honestly, who would you rather have representing you? Who do you trust more?

Don’t lower your expectations, don’t have regrets. Vote for Jamie McLeod-Skinner today
