A man was charged Friday with multiple crimes after being accused of throwing rocks at a mariachi band performing in a southwest Redmond neighborhood.
Court documents allege Michael Eugene Gumm, 64, targeted members of the Mexican band Banda Costa de Oro because of their race. Gumm was charged by Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels with committing a second-degree bias crime, as well as assault, harassment and criminal mischief.
The incident took place on SW 33rd Street in Redmond on April 23.
Charging documents allege the victims — Antonio Moahoca, Ricardo Serafin and Gustavo Antonio Juarez — were playing music in a Redmond yard when Gumm began yelling, throwing rocks and eventually assaulting multiple members of the band, injuring them and damaging at least one musical instrument.
“It’s heartwrenching to see these incidents happen in our community, but I think it’s a testament that we have to continue creating a welcoming atmosphere,” said Daniel Altamirano Hernandez, interim executive director of the Redmond-based Latino Community Association.
Before charges were filed, LCA denounced what they described as “hateful behavior” and argued for “appropriate action to be taken against the individual for causing harm”
Gumm was charged and released and is scheduled to make an initial appears in Deschutes County Circuit Court on May 16.
