An 18-year-old driver spun out in a field after law enforcement officers used a spike strip to end a high speed chase Monday across two Central Oregon counties on U.S. Highway 97.

A high-speed chase across two Central Oregon counties with speeds reaching up to 120 mph resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old Monday evening, law enforcement officials said.

Beginning in Jefferson County, a black and white Dodge Charger sped south at well above 100 mph around 6:15 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Chris Barringer, a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, said in a news release.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies began chasing the car, but quickly stopped because the Dodge Charger was unsafely passing through traffic on U.S. Highway 97, Barringer said.

A Deschutes County sheriff’s deputy saw the car passing through Terrebonne, across the county line, Barringer said. The deputy started chasing the car, but stopped as the car accelerated to 120 mph, he said.

The car reached Redmond, driving on O’Neill Way and Canal Boulevard before returning to Highway 97.

Another sheriff’s deputy put a spike strip on the highway near the Tumalo Road junction north of Bend, Barringer said.

Deputies didn’t clock the driver’s speed at the exact moment the car hit the spike strip, but Barringer told The Bulletin: “The driver’s attempt to maneuver around the spike strip at a high rate of speed likely led him to lose control and leave the highway.”

After hitting the spike strips, the car crashed into wire fencing and irrigation pipes just off the highway and stopped in a field, Barringer said.

Deputies and Oregon State Police troopers, guns drawn, arrested 18-year-old Liam Byrne of Bend on suspicion of nine counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, criminal mischief and eluding a police officer.

“We had many people calling in saying he had almost hit them while passing dangerously,” Barringer said.

Byrne was first taken to St. Charles Bend and later booked in Deschutes County jail around 11:20 p.m. Monday.

Intoxicants were not believed to be a factor, Barringer said.

Byrne is a senior at Mountain View High School, Scott Maben, Bend-La Pine School District spokesperson, confirmed in an email. Byrne is set to be arraigned in Deschutes County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon. Formal charges have yet to be filed.

This is the second chase Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies have pursued in the past month. On March 30, deputies arrested two people who were suspected of stealing a car from Redmond but only after leading police on a multi-hour chase throughout Deschutes County.
