From the editor’s desk: Will two schools become one?

Published 9:00 am Saturday, April 6, 2024

The talk of the town the last few months has been about the future of Redmond High School. Here’s an update on the discussion. The committee formed by the district to study a November bond issue has recommended a consolidation of Redmond and Ridgeview high schools. The Redmond School Board will consider that recommendation next, and voters will likely have the final say in November.

Need something to do this weekend? There are loads of options at the Fair & Expo Center alone.

I hope you’ll come say hello out at the Central Oregon Ag Show on Saturday and Sunday with our friends The Capital Press. There will be loads of useful information from the School of Ranch, OSU Extension and many others, as well as tractors and farm equipment for those in need of big machines for big jobs (and also for those in need of a free place to entertain the kids!)

Plants won’t be the only thing getting dirty at the fairgrounds. The High Desert Stampede is kicking up dust through Sunday as well. Head on out and see some top cowboys and cowgirls

Some important information: Police say a man arrested and charged with child sex abuse may have attempted to contact children in Redmond. See if you recognize him and reach out to law enforcement if you do.

Times were wild 100 years ago ’round Redmond! The Spokesman reported on a fatal shooting and a deathbed confession of a “Central Oregon character” killed by his own wife.

I’ll be moderating a few candidate discussions next week. In partnership with the City Club of Bend and League of Women Voters, tune in to a zoom discussion with all Democratic and Republican candidates for Secretary of State. The top finishers from both parties will face off in November.

On Thursday at the Larkspur in Bend, I will help moderate a forum with all four candidates for county commissioner — including incumbent Phil Chang and his three challengers.

Quote of the Week

“People care about different things. And just because it might be the most fiscally conservative use of money, sometimes for people that is not their main driver. They are lifelong Panthers and the thought of losing that is an emotional cost that is more important to them than the savings.”

— Michael Summers, Redmond School Board
