From the editor’s desk: New look at new rec center

Published 9:00 am Saturday, March 23, 2024

Everyone in Redmond seems to want to know what the recreation center approved by Redmond voters is going to look like — and what all its going to include.

RAPRD board members got a look at updated designs for the $49 million building at their most recent board meeting. There are still final touch-ups to be made, but construction crews are planning for a groundbreaking at the site later this summer and to have the project finished by the end of 2025.

The investigation into a downtown stabbing took a wild turn this week when Redmond police said the victim’s wounds were self-inflicted. What was initially thought to be a crime led police issue a “shelter in place” alert for the downtown area  — since they believed a stabbing suspect was on the loose. After a week of investigation, police say that’s not the case. No charges are expected and they consider the investigation closed.

We’ve got plenty of sports and outdoors news this week, too. Ridgeview hopes to build off the momentum of their 2023 season. So far, so good. They swept the Buckaroos of Pendleton in a Thursday doubleheader to continue the Ravens’ hot start.

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to hunt a mountain goat? Read the story of Redmond hunter Chris Bocchi’s journey to bag one in the Elkhorn Mountains of Eastern Oregon last season.

There’s a couple of important fundraisers coming up in Redmond, including this one that raises money for victims of domestic violence. We hope you’ll find ways to give.

And its never too soon to start thinking about the Central Oregon Ag Show and High Desert Stampede out at the Fair & Expo Center in the first week of April. We’ll be flipping the calendar again before you know it.

It’s also a good time to remind our print subscribers that you will not receive a paper in the mail on Tuesday next week, rather you will get one on Thursday and on each consecutive Thursday moving forward. We hope you’re excited about the new publication date. You’ll find a thicker, better paper waiting in your mailbox. If you’re a digital subscriber, you’ll see no change. We will continue to post news at our website throughout the week.

Quote of the Week

“There is not anything like it in Redmond or close to it … it is going to be another icon in Redmond when we are done.”

— Lena Berry, member of the Redmond Area Parks and Recreation District, on the designs for the new $49 million recreation center
