Redmond School District officials said no one was injured or arrested after a fight broke out on the court following the boys basketball game Feb. 5 between Ridgeview and Redmond.
Videos taken at the end of the game show a group of students and players fighting until spectators and police officers come onto the court to break the melee up. Videos show tensions rising for more than a minute until a small group breaks, including uniformed players, breaks off and begins throwing punches.
Audrey Haugan, principal at Redmond High School, said that no students were arrested during the incident or have subsequently been charged.
School officials said the brawl happened shortly after Redmond High won the game over their in-town rivals 62-59. After the final whistle Redmond High gathered at the center of the basketball court to sing their fight song, traditionally done after a victory. Students supporting the Ridgeview team took offense to their rivals’ display of team pride and the fight broke out, according to Holly Brown, spokesperson for the Redmond School District.
Brown said both Ridgeview and Redmond High students were involved in the fight, but she said it was difficult to determine how it started.
“There were a ton of people on the court, because they got wrapped into it … a cheerleader and the team and fans coming out to the court and adults on the court as well,” Brown said. “It is kind of a mixed bag, and I don’t think anyone had really known or intended or anticipated that would happen. I think that it was only a few students that were involved physically in any way.”
Brown said that district officials have spoken with all students who were involved and “set up a new protocol for postgame behavior.”
Brown said students will now be required to remain in the stands until both teams are off the court.
“Kids won’t be going out onto the court,” said Brown. “It was really a learning experience for everyone because until something like that happened, we didn’t really anticipate that happening.”
Brown said she is not aware of any physical altercations between Redmond and Ridgeview teams in the past. She said both teams had recently been recognized for their sportsmanship by the Oregon School Activities Association.
“All of our sportsmanship, I think has been really great up until this point. I don’t know why it was so bad this time,” Brown said. “I think it went awry … with elevated emotions.”
