The man accused of killing a 33-year-old man in a downtown Bend shooting in August was arraigned Friday in Deschutes County Circuit court. His brother, accused of aiding his flight from police, was also arraigned.
Caleb and Dahnte Cegers were arraigned during separate hearings Friday in connection with the Aug. 10 shooting death of Taylor Wyss of Redmond outside a Bend bar.
After a nationwide manhunt, the pair were arrested in Cleveland, Tennessee without incident on Aug. 18. But the brothers were not extradited to Oregon until this week. They were booked into the Deschutes County jail by the U.S. Marshals Office on Thursday.
The length of time between their arrest and arrival at the Deschutes County jail can be accounted for by transportation logistics, said Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels. Transportation of prisoners is conducted on the marshal’s office schedule and the extradition “did not take very long” in light of that factor, he said.
In Deschutes County, Caleb Joseph Cegers, 21, faces charges of second degree murder, first degree assault with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon . His older brother, Dahnte Nathaniel Cegers, 26, faces charges of unlawfully assisting his brother avoid apprehension.
The shooting took place on Wall Street after a fight in Duda’s Billiards Bar around midnight, authorities say. Investigators believe the fight broke out after Caleb Cegers and a woman he knew, Sadie Madalyn Cole, 22, were asked to leave the bar for being disruptive.
Gunnels has previously said Wyss, 33, of Redmond, did not instigate or participate in the fight before he was fatally shot with a handgun outside the bar.
During Caleb Cegers’ arraignment, prosecutors successfully requested he not be allowed contact with Cole or his brother. Dahnte Cegers was also prohibited contact with Caleb Cegers and Cole.
Similar to Dahnte Cegers, Cole is accused of helping Caleb Cegers leave the shooting in a vehicle. She also faces charges of disorderly conduct and assault in the fourth degree for allegedly punching a bartender during the altercation. Cole was arraigned on Sept. 26 and has a plea hearing scheduled for Nov. 8.
Dahnte Cegers’ bail was posted at $100,000 and, given his past criminal history, he is not allowed near firearms of any kind. In 2017, Dahnte Cegers was accused of burglary in the second degree and assault in the third degree. Two years later, he was also accused of of unlawful use of a weapon after he threatened another man at gunpoint.
Caleb Cegers was represented by court appointed attorney, Lisa C. Valenta. She had no questions on the indictment and did not seek bail for her client.
