A 2023 graduate of Ridgeview High School died Aug. 19 at Anytime Fitness health club in Redmond, the Redmond School District confirmed Tuesday.

The incident at the gym took place in the early morning hours on Saturday, according to Deschutes County 911 dispatch.

The Redmond Police Department and Redmond Fire & Rescue declined to share further details on the matter, however the Redmond School District said the teen male died in a weightlifting accident.

“That’s what we were told, was that it was a weightlifting accident,” said Holly Brown, the public information officer for the school district.

Brown confirmed Tuesday that the victim was a 2023 graduate of Ridgeview High School. She said the district was not authorized to share the former student’s name because he was a minor.

Brown said the school district has numerous resources for students who knew the recent graduate and may be struggling with the loss.

“It is such a small community at Ridgeview that if any of the students who knew this graduate needed some kind of support, they know they are welcome at the school as well,” Brown said.

Ken Brown, battalion chief with Redmond Fire & Rescue, was the shift commander on duty the day of the incident. He said rescue crews never responded to the fitness center.

“We were canceled in all actuality before we got there because we were called for an incident and the police informed our dispatchers that it was a DOA (dead on arrival) and so we didn’t get there,” Brown said. “Redmond PD canceled us before we got on scene.”

Brown declined to comment further on the matter.

Police did confirm they were called and responded to the fitness center, said Lt. Eric Beckwith, spokesperson for the Redmond Police Department.

“I can’t make any comments other than we responded to a medical call at Anytime Fitness,” Beckwith said.
