Redmond air quality poor, residents advised to stay indoors

Redmond residents were greeted with a change in scenery from the clear and sunny skies this weekend to a hazy, smoky Monday morning.
Much of the smoke in the air is due to the Bedrock Fire, which has burned 573 acres in forested areas east of Eugene.
A Redmond High School sensor reports 162 on the Air Quality Index, which is considered to be unhealthy. Residents are advised to stay inside and close all doors and windows.
Sisters also falls under the unhealthy advisory with an AQI of 174. Bend reports very unhealthy and hazardous AQIs ranging from 283 to 358. Prineville falls comfortably in the moderate category with an AQI of 59.
Laura Gleim, media contact for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, anticipates having “intermittent smoke for the next couple days” in Redmond. An air quality advisory is likely be issued for Central Oregon through Wednesday.
While Redmond sits at an AQI of 162, Gleim says that could potentially change for the worse, depending on where the smoke will be blown the next few days.
Those with air conditioning are advised to set their units to recirculate to cut off air from outside and those using indoor ventilations systems should use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Portable air purifiers are also recommended.
Residents should continue checking the air quality throughout the day on their phones through the OregonAir app created by the ODEQ.
Those planning on using masks should opt for either N95s or P100 respirators as they effectively filter out the smoke particles.
