Letter: Redmond not a racist community

I don’t know about everybody else in Redmond, but I for one am tiring of the constant rants by Councilman Clifford Evelyn about how racist the city of Redmond is. Hardly a week goes by that he doesn’t have his picture and often a long editorial in the Spokesman deriding what he continues to call open racism in the city of Redmond.
I have lived in Central Oregon since 1972, with a short stint back to Mississippi where I was raised. In 1993 I retired from the U.S. Postal Service and we moved back to Central Oregon, this time to Redmond. In all those years I have yet to witness or observe all the blatant racist acts Mr. Evelyn alleges to know about or has observed.
Seems to me he needs to direct his “all white people are racist” to a more of “what can we do to eliminate racism with all races contributing.”
As an old black sharecropper told me once: “You can catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar.” The old gentleman sharecropped on land immediately adjacent to my grandpa’s sharecropper land. So this not a racist statement but a first hand repeating of the old farmer’s statement.
