Letter: Hard to imagine the meanness of racism

I recently read an article in the Washington Post about a Redmond student, Gavin Alston, speaking of racism at a municipal meeting.
Congratulations to him for his courage. When I read about his situation my heart broke for him. How can people be so mean and uncaring of other’s feelings?
It is hard enough going to school and trying to get good grades in the best of circumstances.
Gavin has put the small town of Redmond on the map.
Hopefully in time some of the citizens of Redmond will change and be more understanding. Treating anybody as an equal, a kind word, some manners, do make a difference.
The Gavins and Ralph Yarls, I believe will make a different in this mad world.
I am a white privileged person and I have worked with many people from all over the world and every colour, from every circumstance as I was a nurse in the poorest part of Vancouver, Canada for 25 years.
Respect will bring a smile to everyone’s face.
