A 17-year-old Redmond teen drowned at Steelhead Falls Saturday afternoon, according to a release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office.

The teen apparently swam toward the falls on the Deschutes River northwest of Redmond and was caught in the hydraulics of the waterfall. Several people attempted to rescue the teen to no avail.

His body was found about 40 yards down from the falls by a dive team.

The teen was a junior at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.

Crooked River Ranch Fire and Rescue first arrived to the popular swimming area about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the release said. The falls are about a 1/2-mile along a rugged trail from the parking area.

The Deschutes County search and rescue dive team and the Bend Fire & Rescue technical rescue team worked to recover the body.
