Ridgeview’s Nunes goes back-to-back in girls javelin

Ridgeview’s Zowie Nunes launches her winning javelin throw in the Class 5A OSAA state track and field championships in late May in Eugene.

Another year, another state title in the javelin for Ridgeview sophomore Zowie Nunes.

A year after a stunning javelin title victory in 2022, Nunes returned to Hayward Field to claim the javelin championship with a toss of 132-01 feet.

“I was still really nervous,” Nunes said. “Because anyone could have done what I did last year. All it takes is one throw.”

Nunes’ best throw came on her fourth attempt, which would be her second farthest toss of the season. At last week’s IMC championships, she threw 136-09 feet.

“I was hoping to throw further today but it was still good,” Nunes said. “Districts went really well, that got me ready for state.”

Summit’s Thorsett takes 2nd in 3K; sets school record: There was plenty to race for in the final lap of the 5A girls 3,000-meter run for Summit’s Ella Thorsett.

Starting the final lap in third place, Thorsett overtook Canby’s Kenzie Bigej down the home stretch to finish in 9:42.00, behind only Crescent Valley’s Emily Wisniewski.

Not only was Thorsett’s run the second fastest in all the classifications, but it also put her in the record books. The future University of Oregon distance runner broke Fiona Max’s program record (9:43.91 set at the 2019 state meet) in the 3,000.

“I’m pretty confident in my kick,” Thorsett said. “I was really fighting for the school record. That was the goal coming into the race and I knew what I had to run in that final lap to get it, but I knew it was going to be tough.”
