In Richard Scarry’s picture books, the world is a colorful and busy place. In each of these picture books you’ll find two page spreads that show characters busily going to work, school, shopping, driving, policing, flying planes and cleaning windows.

I remember, and I bet you do, too: Staring at the layout of Busy Town, examining each window and wondering how Mr. Lowly Worm drives his car around with no hands!

Librarian Josie Hanneman calls the Redmond (temporary) library a “Richard Scarry Picture book library” and I agree.

Lit up by bright, full length, windows at the front of the space, you’ll find study and laptop areas, comfortable seating, public computer, laptop access, a kids areas, books for all ages, and even a free and bookable small conference room.

What really makes this a Richard Scarry busy space is the low shelving. Stop in and you’ll see a library in action.

The low shelves means you can see almost all of the temporary space at the same time and see what a fun and active place this small space can be.

You might find adults browsing the large print books and curated fiction and nonfiction sections.

Our dedicated collection development librarians knew that the reduced size of the library meant we couldn’t have the large archive of books that everyone enjoyed at the Jessie Hill School or will have at the new library now going up (if you haven’t taken your kids or yourself by to watch the construction you are missing out!).

Instead, they have curated a special collection of new, popular, and an eclectic books and materials that will feed your brain and entertain. You’ll also find kids playing in the children’s section and reading books. Moms, dads, and grandparents pushing strollers and reading to their kids.

Redmond Supervisor Sonja Brandjes says this space her favorite place.

Every day she sees regulars visit who have migrated over now that the new library is under construction.

You will also find those who work remotely hanging out by the front windows for easy power and wifi access.

In the new Redmond library these remote workers will find incredible views and a quiet place to work and take care of business.

Teens study in the sunlight and people of all ages use the public computers.

The temporary Redmond location is a cheerful space staffed by a wonderfully caring and helpful group of people.
