Students and staff of Vern Patrick Elementary helped an 80-year-old woman who had a medical emergency Tuesday morning near the school.

According to Redmond Police, the incident happened about 8:45 a.m. on April 25. The woman was driving her Buick when a medical episode caused her to “hit the curb with her vehicle multiple times” before coming to a stop.

Students Carson Cunningham, 10, and Noelani Cunningham, 7, saw the event and alerted nearby crossing guard Tammy Salka. Salka then called 911 and checked on the driver, who Salka realized was unresponsive.

Nathan Veltrie, parent of a Vern Patrick student, used a rock to break the window of the vehicle, according to police.

Multiple parents, including off-duty nurses, removed the woman from the vehicle provided CPR. She was taken to St. Charles, Bend. As of press time, her condition was unknown.
