Otto’s lands on a winning formula

Otto’s Landing, located on 7th street in downtown Redmond, has been in operation for less than a year. But the catch-all bar, food and entertainment venue is already looking ahead.

The business is owned by Nick and Leilani Olson. Nick Olson said they have had to get creative to keep prices low, as materials and labor costs increased in 2022-23 as inflation soared. Otto’s does not provide food, instead using independent food trucks. Nick Olson said he monitors changing alcohol costs on a weekly basis and adjusts pricing accordingly.

Business is going well, and the couple intend to take on additional ventures in the coming months in downtown Redmond. They said the city has been being timely, communicative, and easy to work with — making future business expansions possible.

Nick Olson was born and raised in Redmond and intends to gear the family’s businesses to locals, rather than tourists and others “just passing through.”

The name Otto’s is a nod to Nick’s grandfather who was a logger. His brand — OTO — can be seen throughout the space along with other family artifacts from the logging industry, giving the space a taste of local history. The Olsons hope their two children will inherit their entrepreneurial spirit, and that seems likely. The couple’s children have taken on their first venture in the space by setting up candy machines.

Nick has over 25 years of bartending experience and has designed the bar menu for patrons who may enjoy cocktails in addition to local beer and cider on tap. Food trucks provide options for those seeking lunch or dinner.

Otto’s added a children’s play area that is visible from all seating on the first floor of the bar. Tucked around a corner is an arcade for older children to enjoy. TVs are positioned throughout the space for sports fans. The couple recently added MLS soccer games to the docket for those so inclined.

Otto’s second floor has a small lounge area with large leather couches and a dedicated television for those hoping to step away from the lively main floor below. The second floor also contains a game space with darts, billiards, and other classic pub games. A large patio off the second floor offers visitors plenty of seating with views of the beautiful Central Oregon sunset.

The venue’s lower patio is available for reservations at no-cost for up to 50 people. The upstairs lounge and patio are also available for reservations and are designed for smaller groups. The spaces have been used for birthday parties, staff appreciation events and, most recently, a bridal shower. Reservations can be made by emailing ottosredmond@gmail.com.

Otto’s does not have live music or events scheduled, which the Olsons said is an intentional choice. The couple said that they hope the space will have a consistent and predictable vibe where families and groups can gather whenever they are free.
