New tunes — and old ones — are now broadcasting from a studio on the second floor of The Belfry in Sisters.
The studio is the first ever brick-and-mortar location for Jive Radio, which is part of a group of nonprofit, noncommercial stations dedicated to independent music.
It is owned by OpenSky Radio Corp, which is based in Lake City, Calif.
Jeff Cotton, director of OpenSky Radio, said the move to Sisters is a step forward for their operations, which have always operated on a “shoestring budget.”
KJIV can continue to be found in Central Oregon at 96.5 FM and at jiveradio.org. The station’s terrestrial broadcasts can be picked up on stereos roughly from Government Camp to La Pine.
Jim Goodwin has been the station’s only live disc jockey since they started operating out of Madras in 2018. The station’s other DJs pre-record their shows, but Goodwin has always broadcast live from his basement studio in Sisters.
Cotton said it only made sense to move the station’s headquarters there, especially after The Belfry owner Angeline Rhett noted the extra upstairs space in one of the city’s premiere performing arts centers.
Goodwin said with a public studio, he expects the station to become more of a community resource in Sisters, a place with a thriving community of musicians and instrument makers.
Cotton said they would love to transition to include more public affairs shows, as well as live broadcasts of concerts, especially at The Belfry. The Sisters Folk Festival has been interested teaming up to broadcast live and taped broadcasts from their popular summer sets, said Goodwin.
Jive is celebrating their new Sisters studio with a “Welcome to Sisters” concert led by Cruz Contreras of the Tennessee-based Americana band Black Lillies. The free concert is set for 7 p.m. on March 14 at the Belfry, 302 E. Main in Sisters.
