- Young runners blast off from the blocks on Thanksgiving morning for a kids fun run, which took place before the Turkey Trot 5k and 10k at Sam Johnson Park in Redmond.
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, a deal-laden Black Friday, a joyful World Cup, a nail-biter of an Oregon-Oregon State game and an invigorating Starlight parade!
It’s wonderful when all the holidays and events combine at a time when we have some extra free time with family and friends. I wrote this week about one of my favorite holiday traditions: the OLCC booze lottery! It’s a great way to luck into some fancy bourbons at off-the-shelf pricing. And way better odds than the Powerball.
But there’s much more to the holiday than good whiskey (or so I’ve heard). I hope you read reporter Nick Rosenberger’s stories about NeighborImpact’s Thanksgiving meal giveaways, and the Redmond Smokehouse, which has been supplying residents with some of the finest turkeys in the area since the 1940s. If you haven’t been the venerable local butcher shop, you should stop by and try the jerky.
We were out and about throughout the holiday, snapping some photos from the Turkey Trot and will take some tonight at the Starlight Parade. Like many of you, we decided not to wake up at the crack of dawn and sit in a cold parking lot for some Black Friday deals. From our new downtown location, it was great to see the hordes of shoppers making their way up and down Sixth Street at more reasonable hours, which I’m sure our local shopkeepers appreciate, too.
There are lots more stories in this week’s paper, including a timely preview of our ski and board shop — just before our local ski hills open for the year. We have stories on a Ukrainian woman living in Redmond who is heading back to Ukraine to volunteer, a story about psilocybin in rural Deschutes County and the Redmond Fire Department training on live fire. Some great photos in that last one that you’ll want to check out.
