What a joy it was to sit on a weightlifting bench and chat with “The Iron Lady of Redmond,” 94-year-old Catherine Kuehn.

I spoke with her weightlifting teammates as photographer Dean Guernsey snapped photos at a Redmond gym. The whole crew was preparing to compete down in Reno — and set some world records on the way.

Catherine is wonderful person, as strong mentally as she is physically at 94 years old. It was tough to get her to brag about her weightlifting career, but it was easy to get her to brag about her husband and the life they made for themselves. It’s such an honor to be a journalist and help tell people’s stories. We get to ask all the questions we want of people who have lived interesting and compelling lives. Catherine certainly makes for a compelling character that I’m glad I, and our readers, got to know. Will update you all next week if she sets another world record for her age group.

Another compelling character you met this week in the Spokesman is James Jarvis. The Afghanistan War veteran has long been troubled by his military service and found that psilocybin therapy has worked for him. Other local vets are using it to and see benefits. As folks in Deschutes County and in Redmond vote whether or not to ban psilocybin service centers, it’s an interesting perspective to consider. A Washington Post story this week reported on some rather remarkable studies that show the drug’s ability to combat depression.
