- The Tavita family has been an integral part of the Redmond community — with their Hokule'a dance performances now stretching across three generations.
The Earth just keeps turning and suddenly another season is upon us: fall.
That brings plenty of joyful changes to Central Oregon, including the crackle of the PA announcer at local high school games and the return of the blue, smokeless skies of spring.
Fall is also the start of political season in Redmond, with four candidates vying for mayor and five vying for three council seats. We’ll have information from all the candidates in upcoming editions before ballots arrive, but there are lots of other opportunities to hear directly from candidates.
I’ll be a moderator Sept. 27 for a mayoral forum at 1 p.m. at the Redmond Senior Center. The Redmond Executive Association has three additional forums scheduled. Oct. 4 will include county commissioner candidates Patti Adair and Morgan Schmidt, Redmond city councilors gather Oct. 11 and the other county commission race (Tony DeBone vs. Oliver Tatom) will be Oct. 25. All events are at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center, 325 NW Dogwood.
I’ll also be moderating another debate, this one put on by the League of Women Voters of Deschutes County. That event will be Saturday, Oct. 22. The Redmond mayor forum will be first, at noon, followed by a city council forum at 2 p.m.
I hope to see everyone there. If you can’t make it, the Spokesman will have recaps from many of the forums in print and on our website.
We’ve got lots of fun stories planned for this week’s edition, including a visit with local veterans returning on their Honor Flight from Washington, D.C. That flight lands at 2:30 p.m. today (Sept. 24) so come out and show your support if you can. We also have stories on our favorite family of Hawaiian dancers, and the coolest produce store in Redmond.
As always, we couldn’t do this without you. News gathering is a community endeavor, so we’d love to have your partnership and support for our efforts.
