Q. How did We’re the Würst get started, what was the seed?
A. We began as a food cart in Bend trying to solve the question: “Why can’t I get a good Bratwurst in town?” We proved a niche for our product that way, traveling all over the Northwest, but began working on our USDA licensing 2019.
Q. What’s with the name? where did it come from?
A. Our good friend came up with the name — we were wanting something catchy, something that would stick. She eats for free.
Q. How many employees?
A. We currently have three employees, but will soon be hiring for the summer season.
Q. What has been the success, opportunity over the last year?
A. We have had nominal success over the last year in spreading our products throughout a variety of locally owned and corporate grocery stores; the brand is growing, recognition is growing and our customer base is growing.
Q. What role did COVID play to help or hinder?
A. COVID-19 helped to get us into grocery stores, which were booming; but made us one dimensional with the closing of restaurants. Our sales flip-flopped from 90/10 restaurant/grocery to more like 99/1 grocery stores/restaurants. Our products are restaurant quality, so it was a bit of a “quality perception” hit to our hand crafted, chef pleasing brand.
Q. Looking forward, what is your prediction for 2021 for your business.
A. We are hoping to land our first large account. Should this come to fruition, we will be distributed across the PNW. •
