Injured hiker assisted at Smith Rock: The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue assisted a Bend hiker who fell just before noon April 11 on the Misery Ridge Trail at Smith Rock State Park. Cassie Mendoza, 27, suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of a fall and was assisted down the trail. Ten search and rescue volunteers and one sheriff’s search and rescue deputy responded to Mendoza’s location. Mendoza refused any further medical attention and was provided a courtesy ride back to her vehicle at the state park parking lot.
Redmond High School program receives grant: Redmond High School’s Career Technical Education manufacturing/engineering program recently received a $10,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation and Selway Machine Tool. Of the money, $2,000 will allow students to take the National Institute of Metalworking Skills certification test. NIMS certifications require both performance and theory exams. Twenty-three Redmond High students have passed and received their credentials for this nationally recognized certification.

Dry Canyon cleanup scheduled on earth day: The city of Redmond is hosting a cleanup of the Dry Canyon to help celebrate Earth Day at 9 a.m. Saturday at American Legion Park. Lunch is provided for volunteers who registered early. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or have a parent/guardian sign a waiver when dropping them off. Redmond candidates to hold forum: Candidates for the Redmond School Board and Redmond Park and Recreation will attend a forum open to the public at 6:30 p.m. April 24 at Highland Baptist Church. For more information, call 541-639-7784.
City Managers meet in special regional forum: City managers from Redmond, La Pine, Bend, Sisters and Madras will meet to discuss community differences and common issues a special forum at 11 a.m. May 4 at Eagle Crest Resort. The panel is hosted by City Club of Central Oregon and will discuss the varying cultures in Central Oregon. Registration is $25 for both members and nonmembers and includes a buffet lunch. let’s raise a glass: Redmond Kiwanis Club will celebrate its 13th annual Wine Gala, Let’s Raise a Glass, at 6 p.m. May 19 at the Redmond Community Church, 237 NW 9th St. The event benefits youth projects in the community, including Beulah’s Place, and features a five-course meal prepared by Tate and Tate Catering paired with wines from Maryhill Winery of Goldendale, Washington. Redmond proficiency academy wins art award: The Oregon Game Project Challenge Team, “The Catournauts,” from Redmond Proficiency Academy was awarded the Art and Design Award at the OGPC statewide event held on April 6th at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The team won the Art and Assets award for their creative art designs, custom soundtracks, sound effects, online art and marketing, and documentation of their process. The team included lead artist Azriel Fall, Justin Greenstone, who did the audio composing and sound effects, Sage Walden, who did the marketing and web design and Beauden Yetter, who helped with the coding. The two player game designed by “The Catournauts” features players racing through a series of mini-games that consist of building a rocket ship, racing to a planet, battling off invaders, and successfully landing to plant their country’s flag.
Ridgeview students compete in business conference: Fifteen Ridgeview High School Ravens traveled to Portland April 6 to compete in the State Business Leadership Conference for Oregon Future Business Leaders of America with three finishing in the top to qualify to compete at nationals in June in Anaheim. Junior Gabrielle Crouch earned first place honors for client services and senior Jack Lindberg won for economics. Garrett Crouch also earned a spot at nationals placing third in word processing. In total, the Ravens had 11 top 10 finishers. More than 1,600 Oregon high school students competed in over 50 events. Results for other Ridgeview students at the conference include Rainey Shriver, who finished in sixth place in journalism and eighth place in client services; Carly Christiansen who finished sixth in client services; Carson Dedmon finished ninth in organizational leadership; Jay Patel finished in ninth place in securities and investments; and Tyler Burnett who finished in 10th place in Entrepreneurship with Lindberg.
Local COCC students graduate as yoga instructors: Eight students graduated April 2 from Central Oregon Community College’s Radiant Health Yoga Teacher Training Program. Redmond’s Katherine Clock and Carlyn Perry and Powell Butte’s Chelsie Carter were among those to endure the 200-hour program that includes teaching methodology, yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology and a teaching practicum The program is a Yoga Alliance registered school. Redmond union project honored: Redmond will be honored for the rehabilitation project that turned the closed Redmond Union High School building into the new City Hall. The city will receive an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award on April 26 in Newberg. The rehabilitation project is considered a statewide model for restoration and adaptive reuse of a locally treasured historic building, honoring its storied past while beginning a new chapter as the home of City Hall.
