Redmond, Ridgeview get all-league picks in football, soccer

After their first playoff appearance since 2016, Redmond High’s football team was well represented on the Class 5A Special District 2 North Division all-league teams.
Making the first team at running back for the Panthers, who finished the league season 4-1 and finished 6-4 overall, was senior Brendan Powell, who had several big games including 159 yards and two touchdowns in an Oct. 4 victory against rival Ridgeview. Other offensive first-teamers for Redmond were junior Jax Cummings at guard and senior Dylan Moss at tackle.
On defense, junior Blaine Aamodt was named first-team on the defensive line. Joining him were senior Colt Folston at linebacker, senior Cooper Browning at defensive back and senior Andrew McKague at punter.
Ridgeview (1-4 league, 2-7 overall) was led in 2019 by junior running back Josh Biever, who was named second-team all-league after finishing the season with 1,119 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Junior guard Logan Shenk also made the second-team offense for Ridgeview, while senior Kevin Edmondson was named to the second team at defensive back.
For Redmond, senior Carson Christensen made the second team at offensive tackle and was joined on offense by Aamodt at tight end, senior Henry Chambers at receiver and McKague at place kicker. Making second-team defense for Redmond were Cummings and Moss on the line, senior Jack McKenzie and junior Austin Carter at linebacker and Chambers at defensive back.
Honorable mention selections on offense were Ridgeview junior Tony Lochner at center, Ridgeview junior Chuck Sheldon at tight end, Redmond junior Kole Davis and Ridgeview’s Edmondson at receiver and Ridgeview senior Cody Woods at running back.
On defense, Ridgeview’s Shenk on the line, Ridgeview junior Dylan Cardwell at linebacker and Ridgeview sophomore Nathen Benz at defensive back were honorable mention selections.
Defending 5A champion Thurston, which is 11-0 and preparing to play Saturday in the state semifinal against Silverton, swept the division superlatives, with senior quarterback Cade Crist named offensive player of the year, senior linebacker Santino Stranieri the defensive player of the year and Justin Starck the coach of the year.
Girls soccer
Intermountain Conference champion Ridgeview (9-1 IMC, 10-5 overall) picked up two awards in girls soccer, with first-year coach Nic Sedor being named league co-coach of the year and senior Averi Hartford named player of the year. Sedor shared the award with Redmond coach Martha Segura, her second time receiving the honor.
Hartford was also named first-team all-IMC at midfield, along with senior Sadie Benz and freshman Selena Gallacher and junior defender Scout Bale.
Named to the second team for Ridgeview were freshmen Lily Gallentine and Hadley Brown and senior Aria Mascal at midfield, sophomore Jessica Sperber at goalkeeper and senior Justice Orlando at defender.
For Redmond (4-6, 6-8), sophomore Dagne Harris, who finished the season with 20 goals, was a first-team choice at forward, while junior Payton Rogerson, who came back from cancer treatment to twice score hat tricks, was a second-team choice at forward. Honorable mention selections for Redmond were senior defender Ingrid Harris and sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa McConnell.
Boys soccer
Ridgeview (8-2 IMC, 11-3 overall) also was well represented in all-league choices in boys soccer. Midfielders Jose Robles, a senior, and Marques Montanez, a junior, and senior defender Javes Benetiz were first-team choices. Making the second-team were senior goalkeeper Dalen Buckley-Noonan, sophomore midfielder Evan Newell and senior Ethan Birmingham and sophomore Tristan Glass at forward. Junior Josh Papen at midfield and sophomore Ryan Martin and freshman Eric Rebuelta at defender were honorable mention choices.
For the Redmond boys (1-9, 1-12-1), senior Owen Byrnes was a first-team midfielder and senior Johnny Najera was a second-team midfielder, while freshman goalkeeper Colin Pearson and junior defender Julian Virgen were honorable mention picks.
