Ridgeview High’s football program remembered a fallen great before the Ravens’ game last week.

Family members and former teammates of Reece Rollins, who was killed last year in an auto accident on the Montana-Idaho border, were on hand as the football field at the school’s stadium was named in honor of Rollins. The 2014 Ridgeview grad was honored for his “extraordinary work ethic, can-do attitude and relentless positivity.”

Rollins’ number 18 was marked on the field at the 18 yard lines, replacing the traditional 20. Instead of a traditional jersey retirement, where the number is never worn again, the school says it will be worn each year by the Raven who is embodies Rollins’ traits of being a “hard worker on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom” and is a consummate teammate.

To mark this year’s recipient of the honor, Rollins’ father, Albert, passed a football to Ridgeview quarterback No. 18 Bryce DeMars.

Rollins immediately etched his name in Ridgeview lore, running 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage at the Ravens’ first ever game in 2012, adding a 40 yard touchdown in that first victory, against Medicine Hat, from Alberta, Canada.

The Sept. 20 ceremony concluded with Ridgeview principal Lee Loving pulling back a cover over a backlit sign on the scoreboard, revealing the name “Reece Rollins Field.” The crowd erupted in applause and the band played the school fight song. The school also announced it will install two bronze plaques in honor of Rollins.

On hand to honor Rollins were 31 members of the 2013 Class 4A state championship team, as well as five coaches. Rollins was a key player on the team, which finished the year 13-1, defeating Cottage Grove 50-31 in the championship game. Rollins, like many members of the team, was part of the school’s first senior class to graduate in 2014.

Rollins was named first-team all state as a tight end the 2013 team.

The Redmond school board approved the naming of the field for Rollins earlier this year.
