Elton Gregory put on lockdown: Elton Gregory Middle School was placed on lockdown Sept. 18 after a student was seen using a knife to carve into a wall and bench, according to a Redmond Police news release. After police were called at 10:37 a.m., the student was detained and taken to St. Charles Redmond for evaluation, police said. According to The Bulletin, the lockdown, where all school and classroom doors are locked and lights turned off, lasted 15 minutes.
Education district names new officials: The Redmond-based High Desert Education Service District has named two new officials for the 2019-20 school year, according to a news release. Sandy Bishop has been appointed assistant superintendant for the district, which is a regional support system for local school districts looking to contact state and national resources. She spent the past seven years as the organization’s executive director of special programs and services, a position now being taken over by Amy Joynt. She was most recently director of special education for the Willamette ESD.
Road closures at Six Corners: Road closures are in place at SW 61st Street and SW Quarry Avenue, as part of the improvement project on the “Six Corners” intersection. The roads are expected to be closed until Oct. 7. Alternate routes are SW Young Avenue and SW McVey Avenue.

Aviation Day: The Redmond Park and Recreation District will hold its third annual Aviation Day event 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way. The event is free and will include activities for all ages and demonstrations of drones, radio controlled aircraft, flight simulators, and more. Let’s Talk About It Training: KIDS Center, a child abuse intervention center, is offering a “Let’s Talk About It” training 5-7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Redmond Library. The training is for parents and caregivers of children 12 and under and addresses the differences between “healthy, developmentally appropriate body exploration, and inappropriate and unsafe behavior that can cause harm to self and others.” For more information or to register, contact 541-306-6062 or visit kidscenter.org/events.
Food preservation workshop: OSU Extension Educator Glenda Hyde and master food preservers will hold a hands-on workshop on safely preparing and preserving jerky, summer sausage and mustard 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Oct. 9 at the OSU Extension office, 3800 SW Airport Way.
