Shepherd’s House to hold benefit concert: Shepherd’s House Ministries will play host to a free benefit concert from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 2 at American Legion Amphitheater, 850 SW Rimrock Way. The concert features Portland-based band MAITA as well as local bands Cosmonautical and Molly and the Middle Schoolers. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Redmond winter shelter.
Mentor Training Class offered: Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth is offering a free six-hour class Sept. 21 to prepare volunteers to become mentors for children with an incarcerated parent. After training and background checks, volunteers are matched with a child in Redmond, Bend, Sisters or La Pine who shares similar interests and commit to spending a few hours a week together for a minimum of one year. Library programs to help people “Know Government”: The following events will be held at the Redmond Library as part of the Deschutes Public Library’s “Know Government” theme: “The Life and Death of Democracies,” a discussion of some of history’s most successful and unsuccessful democracies with COCC history professor Murray Godfrey at 3 p.m. Sept. 21 and “Should We Reform the Electoral College?” an interactive workshop at 6 p.m. Sept. 24.
Class teaches about mason bees: An upcoming Oregon State University Extension Service event will teach participants about the biology, life cycle, habitat needs, protein and nectar needs of mason bees. Caring for the bees is popular because they nest in premade holes and spend the winter in their own cocoons. The Redmond class is being offered — from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 15 at the OSU Extension office at 3800 SW Airport Way. Building 4.

RDM FBO honored: The Leading Edge Jet Center was honored Sept. 8 with the Appreciation Award from the Civil Air Patrol. According to a news release, the volunteer Air Force auxiliary presented the fixed-base operator with the award because of assistance it provided the High Desert Squadron in setting up base operations and getting needed permits to set up antennae and equipment to operate an incident command post. Leading Edge serves corporate travelers with its newly renovated facility at Redmond Municipal Airport.
