A former Redmond man who allegedly fled the country after cutting his ankle monitoring bracelet in 2017 has been returned to Deschutes County, according to a Redmond Police news release.
Ezekiel Sandoval Garcia, now 45, allegedly fled to Mexico to avoid an upcoming trial for charges related to accusations of sexual abuse of a minor, police said. Sandoval Garcia, who was arrested in 2015, later allegedly flew from Mexico to Vancouver, B.C., using a fake name and passport, police said.
Sandoval Garcia was arrested by Canadian border authorities and later abandoned a contested extradition hearing that had been scheduled for May 2019, instead agreeing to be extradited back to Oregon, police said.
His reasons for waiving the hearing are not known, police said.
Sandoval Garcia was taken to the Deschutes County Jail June 7. According to the jail website, he is being held without bond on charges two charges of first-degree sexual abuse, and single charges of first-degree sexual penetration, a first-degree failure to appear and an out-of-county warrant.
“We are pleased Mr. Sandoval is back in jail awaiting his day in court,” Redmond Police Chief Dave Tarbet said in the statement.
“The charges against him are serious and have significantly impacted the minor involved. I wish to thank the U.S. Marshal’s Office, the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Canadian Border Services Agency for their hard work making sure Sandoval was returned to Oregon.”
