Redmond Woman Joins Latino Community Association Board: Verenice Alvarez-Sanchez, of Redmond, has been appointed to the Latino Community Association board of directors as its new secretary. Alvarez works as an executive assistant at Mosaic Medical in Bend and helps facilitate the Juntos program to motivate students and families to stay on course for college. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2013 from Oregon State University-Cascades and began her career with Mosaic as coordinator of a school-based clinic in Redmond.

NeighborImpact receives $5,000 grant: The Oregon Association of Realtors Home Ownership Made Easier Foundation awarded $5,000 to NeighborImpact to support affordable housing, according to a news release from the association. The Redmond-based agency was one of 32 community nonprofits to take home $196,480 across the state. The HOME foundation looks to increase home ownership opportunities for people at or below local median income.

School Board Candidate Webinars: The Oregon School Boards Association is holding two free webinars at noon Jan. 24 and Feb. 19 for people interested in running in their local school board elections, including education service district and community college boards. The webinar is meant to prepare candidates to understand how board actions affect student success, encourage candidates of color to run, help prospective candidates understand board responsibilities and guide participants in planning next steps. The filing period for candidates to run in May 21 school board elections begins Feb. 9 and the deadline is March 21. “We believe that one of the best ways you can make a difference in your community is to run for your local school board,” said Jim Green, OSBA’s executive director and also a member of the Salem-Keizer School Board. “School boards make decisions that change lives and create opportunities for our young people to succeed.”

Redmond student makes dean’s list at Maine college: Samantha Floyd of Redmond, has been named to the 2018 fall semester dean’s list at the University of New England, in Portland, Maine. The dean’s list recognizes students who received at least a 3.3 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0.
