Nov. 30, 1943 – June 7, 2018

Remigio Remy Ezequiel Valido y Torres, of Tumalo, died on June 7, 2018, survived by his wife, Gretchen (Broman), children, Alexander and Stephanie, and grandchildren, Slater, Sophia and Samantha.

Born in Havana, Remy was the only child of Cuban Consul Remigio Valido y Rivero and architect Isabel Gage Torres y Diaz. Upon his fathers death in 1959, he and his mother became the first Cuban refugees of that era.

Remy met Gretchen at the U. of Washington and they married Dec. 30, 1967, in Palos Park, Illinois. He taught at Cate School, Carpinteria, then at Cathedral School, San Francisco, becoming a naturalized citizen in August 1970. The family resided in San Francisco until 1984 before moving to Piedmont, CA.

Remy was the prime organizer of Oceanic Society, the first nonprofit dedicated to marine conservation. He co-founded Northwest Power Co. to develop small hydroelectric plants in California. In 1992, the family moved to Tumalo, where Remy formed Specialty Produce, a local herbs business, retiring in 2017.

We remember Remy for his wit, intellectual curiosity and culinary skill. He enjoyed camping, 49er football, and especially time with family and pets, Heidi, Taco, Daisy.

A celebration of life will be held Sept. 22, 2:00 p.m, at Hollinshead Park Barn.
