Joshua “Josh” Young, age 34, who was a synthetic chemist, died August 1. Josh was born on January 17, 1984, to Richard and Diana Young in Bakersfield, California.

He started his chemistry career as an intern at Roche Pharmaceuticals in Palo Alto, California, while still a high school student. After graduating from Gunn High School in Palo Alto, he obtained a degree in chemistry from San Jose State University. He then joined MicroSolv Technology Corp. as a synthetic chemist in Norwich, New York, and then later transferred to Wilmington, North Carolina. There he conducted RandD in the synthesis and characterization of silica hydride-based chromatographic stationary phases and developed applications for those materials. He presented his research at conferences throughout the United States, England, and Germany as well as publications in numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals and industry magazines. Josh had recently entered a chemistry Ph.D. program to enhance his chemistry career.

His remains will be interred at Pioneer Cemetery near Smith Rock State Park.

Josh is survived by his father, Richard Young; mother, Diana Young; and two brothers, Daniel and Joseph.

He was deeply loved by his family, friends, and scientific colleagues and will be greatly missed.
