Sept 5, 1918 — Increased pay for officers is asked

A bill to increase the pay of army officers was introduced in the house by Representative Dyer of Missouri. The bill provides that a colonel shall receive $4500, a lieutenant colonel $4000, a major $3500, a captain $2900, first lieutenant $2500 and second lieutenant $2200. Most Central Oregon potato sheds will start operating the week of Sept. 23, although one shed plans to open next week to run the comparatively small acreage of Norgolds in Jefferson County. Meanwhile, russets are doing well and the tubers are putting on size rapidly, as there has been no frost. Some fields may not show sufficient maturity for harvest by the time sheds open. Defoliation is underway to some extent.
